HKB Research Associate Giovanna Gatto’s research project focuses on the analysis of the piano repertoire of Ottorino Respighi (1879–1936) from a philological, historical, and historiographical perspective. Its aim is to provide a scientific basis for a new interpretation of the composer’s piano works within the context of his complete musical output. The corpus comprises approximately thirty compositions, including sketches, fragments and incomplete scores, preserved at the Fondazione Cini in Venice, the State Archives of Milan, and the Biblioteca della Musica in Bologna. The entire collection amounts to more than three hours of music and constitutes a compositional laboratory that offers a privileged perspective on the composer’s creative process. Although Respighi is mainly remembered today as one of the greatest Italian symphonists, his piano works deserve to be rediscovered and performed as an important and essential part of his output. The focus of the research project makes it possible to extend our view of his musical heritage beyond the symphonic field, for which he is most chiefly recognised.

Das Forschungsprojekt von Giovanna Gatto, assoziierte Forscherin an der HKB, konzentriert sich auf die Untersuchung des Klavierrepertoires von Ottorino Respighi (1879–1936) aus philologischer, historischer und historiografischer Perspektive. Ziel ist es, eine wissenschaftliche Grundlage für eine neue Interpretation der Klavierwerke innerhalb des Gesamtwerks des Komponisten zu schaffen. Das untersuchte Korpus umfasst etwa dreissig Kompositionen, darunter auch Skizzen, Einzelblätter und unvollständige Partituren, die in der Fondazione Cini in Venedig, im Staatsarchiv Mailand sowie in der Biblioteca della Musica in Bologna aufbewahrt werden. Es umfasst mehr als drei Stunden Musik und bildet ein kompositorisches Arbeitsfeld, das einen vertieften Zugang zum Verständnis des kreativen Prozesses des Komponisten ermöglicht. 
Heute gilt Respighi vor allem als einer der grössten italienischen Sinfoniker. Seine Klavierwerke verdienen es jedoch, als integraler und wesentlicher Bestandteil seines Œuvres wiederentdeckt und aufgeführt zu werden. Der Fokus der Forschungsprojekts ermöglicht es, das Verständnis seines musikalischen Erbes über die sinfonische Dimension hinaus zu erweitern, für die er vornehmlich bekannt ist.
