Musiktheater im Brennpunkt von Bild und Bewegung
Eine Veranstaltung des SNF-Projekts Moving Meyerbeer

Die interdisziplinäre Tagung untersucht Phänomene der Bewegungsgestaltung im französischen Musiktheater des 19. Jahrhunderts unter besonderer Berücksichtigung der Werke des kosmopolitischen Komponisten Giacomo Meyerbeer (1791–1864) und deren künstlerischem Umfeld. Im Fokus steht das Zusammenspiel von sicht- und hörbaren Bewegungen, das damals in der Oper eine besondere Intensivierung erlebte. 1853 formulierte Louis-Désiré Véron, der ehemalige Direktor der Pariser Oper, sein vielzitiertes Erfolgsrezept folgendermassen: ein Werk der Gattung Grand opéra besteht aus fünf Akten und einem packenden historischen Stoff; es ist in der Lage, überwältigende Emotionen zu transportieren und wie ein Ballett unmittelbar audiovisuell verständlich zu sein.
Die Tagung versammelt internationale Positionen aus der aktuellen Opernforschung sowie Vertreter anderer Disziplinen, die Meyerbeers Schaffen aus kunst-, musik- und tanzwissenschaftlichen Perspektiven betrachten. Die wissenschaftlichen Referate werden von einem künstlerischen Programm umrahmt. Mit der Vorführung von ausgewählten Opernszenen, Melodramen und Tanzarrangements durch die Fachbereiche Oper/Theater und Musik der Hochschule der Künste Bern realisiert sich unser Anliegen, Forschung und Interpretationspraxis zu verbinden.

Opera through the Prism of Visuality and Kinesis

This interdisciplinary conference will explore kinetic phenomena in nineteenth century French opera, in particular the works of the cosmopolitan composer Giacomo Meyerbeer (1791–1864) and their broad artistic context. A primary focus will be the interaction between visual and musical movement that constituted a central nucleus of Parisian opera production at the time. In 1853 the former director of the Paris opera Louis-Désiré Véron, famously coined his formula for success: a French ‘Grand opéra’ should consist of five acts with a compelling historical plot; it should be capable of transporting powerful emotions and, like a ballet, be immediately comprehensible to the eye and ear.
The conference brings together international experts of current opera research and specialists of  other fields who examine Meyerbeer’s oeuvre from the perspectives of art history, musicology and dance studies. These scientific presentations will be complemented by a program of artistic performances – a selection of opera scenes, melodramas and dance arrangements presented by the Opera/Theatre and Music departments of the Bern University of the Arts – illustrating the connections between research and artistic practice at the centre of our project.
